Clerk-Recorder's Office launches "Matters-of-Fact Vs Misconceptions" feature

New informational feature will periodically highlight important elections-related facts and clarify common misconceptions

"We live in an era of lightning-fast communication and abundant sources of information. While this is often quite useful, it can also lead to a proliferation of misinformation and confusion.

Through our new Matters-of-Fact Vs Misconceptions series, we’ll share helpful and reliable elections facts. Have a question that you’d like addressed?

Email us at elections@co.slo.ca.us – chances are, you’re not the only one looking for the answer."

Voter address confirmation postcards in the mail

Pre-election mailing assists the Elections Office in confirming addresses and updating voter rolls prior to the March 5 Primary.

The SLO County Elections Office works in conjunction with the California Secretary of State’s Office and various state and local agencies to maintain current and accurate voter rolls. We also rely on direct communication with our voters.

As we lay the groundwork for the March 5 Presidential Primary Election, we’re mailing postcards to all currently registered SLO County voters. These Pre-election Residency Confirmation Postcards are one of many tools we use as part of the list maintenance process. The cards provide a way for recipients to update their mailing or physical address and ensure that their voter registration is current.

Deadline to apply to run for office is December 8

Anyone interested in running for one of the offices listed below must complete the necessary paperwork by 5 pm on December 8

Monday, November 13 signals the beginning of the nomination period for the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election. Anyone interested in running for one of the offices listed below must complete the necessary paperwork by 5:00 pm on Friday, December 8.

District Attorney stops $9 million in real estate scams

The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office Real Estate Fraud Unit has been investigating the scam and working closely with real estate professionals to protect land owners from falling prey.

The scheme involves thieves pretending to be property owners and contacting real estate agents and trying to sell land they do not own. You can read our previous press release detailing the fraud here: District Attorney urges Real Estate professionals to be on alert for criminal fraud by thieves pretending to be property owners

To date, District Attorney Investigators have successfully thwarted nearly $9 million in fraudulent real estate sales within our county. Continuing this effort, the District Attorney’s Office is poised to launch a focused letter campaign warning owners of unencumbered undeveloped land within San Luis Obispo County and providing information on how to monitor and protect these properties.

Owners of undeveloped lots that do not have any encumbrances are encouraged to check their property address using a trusted real estate website such as Zillow or MLS (Multiple Listing Service) to determine if their property has been fraudulently listed for sale. Additionally, owners may conduct a property title search using the County Clerk-Recorder website official record search.

If you discover that your property has been fraudulently listed for sale or sold, contact District Attorney Senior Investigator Eric Vitale immediately at (805) 781-5868 or by email at evitale@co.slo.ca.us.

Citizen's group launches recall against Supervisor Gibson

A citizens' group initiated a recall effort against San Luis Obispo County Supervisor Bruce Gibson due to allegations of his failure to follow open government laws, attempts to privatize North County water, and excessive control over county departments.

The Committee to Support the Recall of Supervisor Bruce Gibson served him with a notice of intent to recall, accompanied by proof of service. They believe that a change in leadership is necessary to restore the county's values and integrity.
In a response, Gibson wrote: "I'm not surprised these highly-partisan activists would try this, given their track record:
  • They gerrymandered the district and lost anyway.
  • They demanded a recount when I won, then refused to pay our Elections Office what they owed.
  • They continue to peddle election fraud conspiracy theories.
This petition notice is full of distortions and lies -exactly like the losing campaign they ran against me just last year. Note that two of the candidates I defeated last year are lead proponents of this recall.

They're MAGA fanatics and this is just what they do. San Luis Obispo County voters are smart and they'll see through this vain attempt to nullify last year's election. Voters are also tired of these constant attacks on our democracy. I expect this stunt will fail."
To proceed with the recall, the committee needs to collect approximately 7,500 signatures, and if successful, the recall could be included on the March ballot.

However, the new recall rules in California, as of 2023, do not allow voters to select a replacement; instead, Governor Gavin Newsom will appoint a District 2 supervisor if Gibson is recalled.

County seeks public ideas on spending federal homeless grant

County homeless officials are seeking the public's input on how to spend millions in a federal grant.

The County of San Luis Obispo’s Homeless Services Division is requesting community feedback to guide its use of the federal dollars received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The County expects to allocate about $3.1 million received from HUD in 2024, which may be used to support investments in affordable housing, community development, and homeless assistance programs.

All SLO County residents are encouraged to complete the survey at slocounty.gov/communitydevelopment. All responses are anonymous and confidential. The survey will be open until Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 11:59PM.
