County seeks public ideas on spending federal homeless grant

County homeless officials are seeking the public's input on how to spend millions in a federal grant.

The County of San Luis Obispo’s Homeless Services Division is requesting community feedback to guide its use of the federal dollars received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The County expects to allocate about $3.1 million received from HUD in 2024, which may be used to support investments in affordable housing, community development, and homeless assistance programs.

All SLO County residents are encouraged to complete the survey at slocounty.gov/communitydevelopment. All responses are anonymous and confidential. The survey will be open until Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 11:59PM.

“The community is our greatest partner in addressing the housing challenges and homelessness that we see in San Luis Obispo County,” said George Solis, Administrative Services Manager for the Homeless Services Division. “By sharing your thoughts and experiences, our team and local leaders are better able to make informed policy decisions and determine the best way to use these federal investments in our community.”

The community development needs assessment is conducted on an annual basis and used in implementing SLO County’s Five-Year Consolidated Plan and drafting annual Action Plans. The Five-Year Consolidated Plan and the annual Actions plans are community development plans that discuss countywide characteristics, identify community improvement priorities, and outline a plan to fund and implement them. These plans are required by HUD for the County to receive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME), and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) funds.

A public hearing and presentation of the community development needs assessment will be provided in conjunction with the regular Board of Supervisors meeting scheduled for November 28, 2023, at the Katcho Achadjian Government Center in San Luis Obispo.

The results of the assessment and corresponding 2024 Action Plan will be found at slocounty.gov/communitydevelopment in early 2024.
