Morro Bay citizens group fights industrialization

The Citizens for Estero Bay Preservation, a Morro Bay citizens group, has successfully gathered 1,486 signatures to push for an initiative against the industrialization of the city's waterfront.

The group's aim is to preserve the city's coastline for both residents and tourists. This initiative is in response to concerns about potential projects altering zoning regulations despite the city's established land use plan, according to a report by CalCoast News.

Vistra, a Texas-based energy company, intends to replace the Morro Bay power plant with a battery energy storage facility. The proposed initiative seeks to solidify the city's land use plan and prevent such industrialization efforts.

The initiative would necessitate resident approval to modify land designations in the coastal region and aims to maintain Morro Bay's status as a renowned tourist destination.

While there is general support for an offshore wind farm near Morro Bay, worries persist about onshore support systems impacting the local community and tourism. The proposed initiative could also hinder plans for constructing an industrial wharf in the area.

Various agencies are evaluating potential port locations to assemble wind farm components, with Port San Luis being the top choice and Morro Bay as the second option. Studies indicate that industrialized ports can lead to declines in property values and tourism.
