Pacific Wildlife Center set to move from Morro Bay to SLO

Pacific Wildlife Care in Morro Bay got the green light from the county to build a new facility on a 10-acre site near San Luis Obispo.

A new site on Buckley Road will be used to construct the proposed center, which would have more than 40,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space in total.

Executive Director of Pacific Wildlife Care Christine Johnson says the project is a challenging task, but one that the group is enthusiastic about it.

According to Johnson, the nonprofit's relocation plans were motivated by uncertainty around the future of the Morro Bay power plant. The current owner Vistra Energy plans to build a battery storage plant where the three distinctive smokestacks will be demolished. Pacific Wildlife Care is aware of its limited time as a renter.

Although the relocation may be necessary, Pacific Wildlife Care has much to gain. Along with more than 30,000 square feet of outdoor space, including a specialized flight area for recovering raptors, a two-story interior clinic is planned. Still, Johnson told New Times SLO that leaving Morro Bay will be challenging.
